Meetings at the Center on April 19 and 20

On April 19 the Human Rights Representative of the German Embassy in Russia and the Commissioner for the North Caucasus, Lars Olberg, visited Stavropol.

On April 20 the British diplomats: Murad Tangiev, the conflict prevention projects coordinator, as well as the first and second secretaries of the political department, Jonathan Evans and Catherine McKenna, visited Stavropol.

During the visit British diplomats and their German colleague met with independent experts at the Center for Science and Social Innovationsheaded by a specialist in regional security, political scientist, Ivan Babin.

The Europeans asked with undissembled interest what is happening today in the Caucasus: how serious is the terrorist threat? Are there many migrants? Does Turkey have a great influence in the region? After all, these are the problems that concern all EU countries.

Surely, the most acute problem nowadays is terrorism: in the last month terrorist attacks organized by Islamic radicals have occurred in three European cities - London, Stockholm, St. Petersburg. That shows the necessity of joint efforts to counter this common threat. Although Russia and the European Union have some disagreements in geopolitical issues - position on the Donbass, the Crimea, Syria, Jonathan Evans admitted that it is a big policy. And no matter how acute the contradictions between the two countries, ordinary embassy staff should continue to establish contacts at their own level. Only they can guarantee that the current "cold" war will not sooner or later turn into a "hot" war.
